Emilh created the topic: Shopsmith update
Interesting article in Dayton Register about Shopsmith going private. The gist of the problem is increased costs associated with a public corporation that does not go to actual operations.
It also appears the association with Lowes is not working well, most tool buyers purchase individual tools.
So the focus is whether the current economy can support a unit like the Shopsmith as it could 20-30 years ago.
What is their target market?
My opinion only, is it is a shame that their aren't more home craftsman as in the past.
I know I like to do my own carpentry, but I bought my SS used, I don't know if my projects would warrant a $3,000.00 investment.
Maybe that is why there is so much activity on E-bay, though it is not MY preferred choice.
If you want to read the article go to "Shopsmith" on your search engine, one of the options is the news release.
It sure would be a shame for the company to disappear

I have looked at both Lowe's stores in this area and looked for any hint of them offering shopsmith. There was nothing at either one not even a pamphlet. I figured if they had any interest at all they would at least have one there to show or maybe a picture of one.

It comes in waves. At least at the Lowes here near me, about a month or two prior to the annual(?) demo, they have them on display with literature available. They keep the floor model around for a few weeks after the demos, then there's no trace.

OK, I just got a couple of emails from shopsmith that they will have demos in Ocala and Gainsville, FL in a few weeks in the Lowes. I will go if they come to Orlando.

The article appears in the Dayton Business Journal, not the Dayton Register.
Sorry about the confusion.

I'm sory to hear SS is not doing well as a buisness. Ive owned mine for 20 years now.

But the problem is more with the kid, (young people) when I went to school the wood shop was the hardest to get into beacuse there was only so many spots open. today the high schools are geting rid of the wood shops beacuse no one wants to learn the skills.

If kids dont learn, then who will buy new products.

I'm sory I need to keep this short.
The problem is much biger than ShopSmith's problem.
