The speed cam follower has a bearing in the other end. That bearing can wear out. When in does that rotating spindle starts to grind metal to metal. I had metal shavings all over the inside of my Mark VII(I got the machine it had not been run in years). That bearing need regular maintenance and checkups to make sure is has not failed. The bearing is actually part of the Control sheave(cam follower and bearing assembled). The Shopsmith item number is 501325. The assembly was not that difficult to swap out. Runs like a dream now. I just make sure I check that bearing about once a month to make sure it still spins.

I''m a stay-at-home dad with a 2.5 yr old and 2 newborn twins.

I plan on sending the thing off for a new metal cam, new bearings, new switch (mine's jury rigged with a toggle switch right now), cleaned, the whole bit.

Won't be cheap, but I'll essentially have a brand new headstock for the cost of 1/3 of what they go for at auction.

JPO. Where are you sending your headstock to have the cam replaced? I seem to remeber that there was a fellow that made metal replacements for the plastic cam parts, but can't find an address. Mine has been acting up and I expect to have to rdo some rebuilding. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide. Greg

You can also get new CNC metal speed cams from Batells Hardware in CA. I bought one for like $50.00 and it works fine
