My Mk VII was working fine before I disassembled it and put it in storage for 3 years. Now after reassembling it, when I switch it on, the motor just hums but won'r run. If I turn the spindle, it runs a bit slowly by itself, then stops again. Any ideas on what is wrong?

Yes. The same thing happened to me. What I found was that the varible width pulleys (sp) had spread all the way open (because the speed control was busted). How I fixed it (the first time) was to take off the cowling and the access hole plate (the thing that has "Shop Smith" printed on it) and manually move the speed controller to the fattest part of the speed control cam. This brings the pulleys together and subsequently the pulley belt. This will prevent your pulley belt from bound. Hope that this helps.
